Poland's COVID-19 deaths hit new daily high of 954

Poland on Thursday reported 27,887 fresh COVID-19 infections and a record 954 new deaths linked to the coronavirus.

Officials said the record daily death toll was in part due to previously unreported fatalities from the Easter weekend.

A total of 2,499,507 people have tested positive for the coronavirus in Poland since the pandemic began, and 56,659 have died in connection with the COVID-19 respiratory disease so far, public health officials announced.

Of the new cases confirmed by officials on Thursday, 4,880 were in the southern coal mining region of Silesia.

Meanwhile, 3,910 new infections were reported in the central region of Mazowieckie, which contains the national capital Warsaw.

The southern province of Małopolskie, which is home to the historic city of Krakówhad the third-highest number of new infections confirmed by officials on Thursday, at 2,813.

The latest deaths in Poland’s coronavirus outbreak are 713 people with pre-existing medical conditions and 241 who died directly because of COVID-19, the Polish health ministry said.

Its spokesman Wojciech Andrusiewicz said the reported number of fatalities included "about 100 deaths from Good Friday, around 130 from Holy Saturday and 130 from Easter Sunday."

On Wednesday, Poland confirmed 638 deaths and 14,910 new coronavirus infections nationwide, compared with 60 deaths and 8,245 fresh cases a day earlier.

Last Thursday, April 1, the Polish health ministry confirmed 35,251 new single-day cases, the most since the pandemic hit the country more than a year ago.

Poland’s second-highest number of daily cases was when 35,143 new coronavirus infections were confirmed nationwide on March 26.

On November 25, the country reported its second-highest daily toll of 674 deaths related to the coronavirus.

Poland's first case of coronavirus infection was reported on March 4, 2020.

34,864 in hospitals, 433,346 quarantined

The health ministry announced on Thursday morning that 34,864 COVID-19 patients were in hospitals nationwide, 3,362 of them on ventilators, with a further 433,346 people quarantined for possible coronavirus exposure.

Meanwhile, 2,076,504 people have now recovered from COVID-19 throughout the country, including 21,807 over the last 24 hours, the health ministry also said.
