Poland reports 20,027 new coronavirus cases, 566 more deaths

Poland on Friday reported 20,027 new coronavirus infections and 566 more deaths related to COVID-19, bringing the country's total number of cases during the pandemic to 3,923,472 and fatalities to 90,872.

Of the new cases confirmed on Fridaythe most—2,972—were in the densely populated southern coal-mining region of Silesia.

Meanwhile, 2,621 new infections were reported in the central Mazowieckie province, which includes the national capital Warsaw.

The latest deaths in Poland’s coronavirus outbreak are 418 people with pre-existing medical conditions and 148 others who died directly because of COVID-19, the health ministry said.

On Thursday, Poland confirmed 592 deaths and 22,097 new coronavirus infections nationwide, compared with 669 deaths and 24,266 fresh cases a day earlier.

On April 8the country reported its highest daily toll of 954 deaths related to the coronavirus.

On April 1, the Polish health ministry confirmed 35,251 new single-day cases, the most since the pandemic hit the country early last year.

Poland's first case of coronavirus infection was reported on March 4, 2020.

23,795 in hospitals, 638,240 quarantined

The Polish health ministry announced on Friday morning that 23,795 COVID-19 patients were in hospitals nationwide, 2,106 of them on ventilators, with a further 638,240 people quarantined for possible coronavirus exposure.

Meanwhile, 3,386,221 people have now recovered from COVID-19 throughout the country, the health ministry also said.

Public health authorities on Friday confirmed Poland's second case of the omicron COVID-19 variant.

Earlier this week, a range of new coronavirus restrictions took effect in the country as it seeks to fend off the new, highly contagious strain of the coronavirus.
