Poland reports 17,156 new coronavirus cases, 616 more deaths

Poland on Thursday reported 17,156 new coronavirus infections and 616 more deaths related to COVID-19, bringing the country's total number of cases during the pandemic to 4,017,420 and fatalities to 93,445.

Of the new cases confirmed on Thursdaythe most—2,269—were in the central Mazowieckie province, which includes the national capital Warsaw.

Meanwhile, 2,204 new infections were reported in the densely populated southern coal-mining region of Silesia.

The latest deaths in Poland's coronavirus outbreak are 482 people with pre-existing medical conditions and 134 others who died directly because of COVID-19, the health ministry said.

On Wednesday, Poland confirmed 775 deaths and 18,021 new coronavirus infections nationwide, compared with 538 deaths and 13,806 fresh cases a day earlier.

On April 8the country reported its highest daily toll of 954 deaths related to the coronavirus.

On April 1, the Polish health ministry confirmed 35,251 new single-day cases, the most since the pandemic hit the country early last year.

Poland's first case of coronavirus infection was reported on March 4, 2020.

22,543 in hospitals, 397,998 quarantined

The Polish health ministry announced on Thursday morning that 22,543 COVID-19 patients were in hospitals nationwide, 2,080 of them on ventilators, with a further 397,998 people quarantined for possible coronavirus exposure.

Meanwhile, 3,500,570 people have now recovered from COVID-19 throughout the country, the health ministry also said.

Public health authorities last Thursday confirmed Poland's first case of the omicron COVID-19 variant. Since then 14 more omicron cases have been reported.

In the middle of last week, a range of new coronavirus restrictions took effect in the country as it seeks to fend off the new, highly contagious strain of the coronavirus.
