Andrzej Duda made the announcement after holding a phone call with Israeli President Isaac Herzog, Polish state news agency PAP reported.

The Polish president's office said in a statement that “the two presidents discussed the promotion of their countries' bilateral relations. It was agreed that relations would be restored to their proper course.”

Israel requests return of Polish ambassador

The statement added: “President Herzog, in a joint initiative with the Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of the State of Israel, requested the return of the ambassador of Poland. President Duda agreed that the Polish ambassador should be appointed soon and announced that the new Israeli ambassador–designate to Poland will present his letters of credence within the next few days.”

Israel’s new ambassador to Poland, Jacov Livne, arrived in the country in February.

Meanwhile, Poland has been without an ambassador to Israel since Tel Aviv recommended last year that the Polish envoy, who was on holiday in Poland at the time, does not return to Israel.

Tel Aviv’s move came after Poland passed legislation introducing a statute of limitations on claims for the restitution of property.

The statute of limitations applied to property that had been seized from Jews by Poland's Nazi German occupiers during the Holocaust and was later kept by the country's postwar communist rulers.

The Polish president’s office said in its statement on Monday that both heads of state had voiced their hope "that any future issues between Poland and Israel will be solved through sincere and open dialogue and in a spirit of mutual respect.”
