The European Parliament on Wednesday designated Russia as a state sponsor of terrorism, saying that Moscow's military strikes on civilian targets across Ukraine, such as energy infrastructure, hospitals and schools, violated international law, the Reuters news agency reported.

"Poland welcomes today's European Parliament resolution declaring Russia as a state sponsor of terrorism," the Polish foreign ministry said in a tweet on Wednesday.

"This is another strong voice of the EU condemning Russia's actions and an expression of support for Ukraine, which has been facing Russian aggression for nearly nine months," it added.

Within the European Union, the parliaments of four countries have so far designated Russia as a state sponsor of terrorism, PolandLithuania, Latvia and Estonia, according to Reuters.
