Poland has ushered in 2023 with firework displays and celebrations, although the backdrop of the war in Ukraine and soaring prices has prompted some cities, such as the capital Warsaw and Lublin, to cancel official New Year’s Eve events.

Ahead of New Year’s Eve night, police and medical services urged the public to be cautious with fireworks during the festivities to avoid getting hurt, news outlets reported.

People were also asked to be mindful of the needs of war-traumatized Ukrainian refugees living in Poland and to take extra care of pets, which might be frightened by fireworks, according to officials.

Meanwhile, New Year’s Eve parties went ahead free of restrictions for the first time since the COVID-19 pandemic.
