Deputy Foreign Minister Arkadiusz Mularczyk will head to Washington for talks with US officials and he also plans to visit New York, the seat of the United Nations, public broadcaster Polish Radio’s IAR news agency has reported.
Mularczyk told Polish state news agency PAP earlier this month that he was planning to discuss Poland's push for WWII compensation from Germany during talks with "congressmen, senators, politicians, the American public and the Polish community in the US."
He said at the time that "American support is very important" and could prove to be "crucial."
Last Friday, the Polish ambassador to the UN, Krzysztof Szczerski, met with Csaba Kőrösi, a Hungarian diplomat serving as the president of the UN General Assembly, asking him to look into the issue of compensation for Poland from Germany over WWII, the IAR news agency reported.
UN Secretary-General António Guterres has also received a copy of an official letter of request from Poland, reporters were told.
In September last year, Poland's government announced that the losses suffered by the country at the hands of Nazi Germany during World War II totalled PLN 6.22 trillion (EUR 1.3 trillion) and that it would demand compensation from Berlin.
In October, Polish Foreign Minister Zbgniew Rau signed a formal note to the government in Berlin, demanding compensation for losses Poland sustained during the war.
According to the German government, "the issue of reparations and compensation for World War II losses remains closed” and Berlin "does not intend to enter into negotiations on the matter," officials have said.
