Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki and Romanian President Klaus Iohannis discussed ways to enhance the cooperation of their countries as part of the Bucharest Nine (B9) group of eastern-flank NATO allies, the Polish Prime Minister's Office said.
Morawiecki described the level of bilateral cooperation amid Russia's war in Ukraine as "exceptional."
"Poland and Romania know the Russian threat all too well," he said.
"Nothing brings regions closer than a common response to threats and an understanding of common interests," he declared.
Morawiecki also said that Poland and Romania "are the closest US allies."
"There are only a few countries that are both as pro-European and pro-American as we are," he told reporters.
He added that Poland and Romania were jointly working to strengthen NATO "by enhancing military cooperation."
Romania's Iohannis tweeted after the meeting that he had a "very good discussion" with Morawiecki about their countries' "strategic partnership and enhancing bilateral, European and NATO coordination."
Earlier in the day, Morawiecki and his Cabinet ministers discussed Russia's war against Ukraine and a range of bilateral and European issues with their Romanian counterparts during two-way talks in Bucharest.
Speaking at a joint news conference with Romanian Prime Minister Nicolae Ciucă after the talks, Morawiecki said that Poland and Romania were working together with in many areas of defence policy, including joint purchases of weapons, troop training and military assistance to Ukraine.
During his visit to Bucharest on Tuesday, the Polish prime minister also attended a Polish-Romanian business forum, during which he described Romania as “a big ally in the fight for common interests.”
Tuesday was day 398 of Russia’s war in Ukraine.
