Poland's government has approved a plan to build a waterway to a future container terminal in the Baltic port of Świnoujście, Deputy Infrastructure Minister Marek Gróbarczyk has announced.

The government on Friday "adopted a long-term programme for the construction of a shipping route to the Container Terminal in Świnoujście" near the German border, Gróbarczyk said in a tweet.

He added: "The new fairway will run exclusively through Polish waters, so we will not be dependent on our German neighbour."

Gróbarczyk has previously said that, thanks to the construction of the new deepwater container port and access route, the port of Świnoujście will be able to rival Germany's Hamburg "six to seven years from now," public broadcaster Polish Radio’s IAR news agency reported.

After the container terminal is built, Świnoujście, in partnership with the nearby port of Szczecin, will be able to serve the largest ocean-going ships, according to officials.

At the moment, the Szczecin-Świnoujście port complex does not serve large container ships, the IAR news agency reported.

Poland plans to spend more than PLN 10 billion (EUR 2.2 billion, USD 2.4 billion) by 2029 to expand its northwestern port of Świnoujście, Polish Radio's polskieradio24.pl news website reported.

Świnoujście is also home to a liquefied natural gas (LNG) terminal that is currently being expanded, officials have said.
