The national weather service IMGW announced the alert on Friday.

It said the southern Małopolska region and the southeastern Podkarpacie province could see a snowfall of up to 55 centimetres between Friday night and Sunday.

In the Polish section of the Carpathian Mountains, the snow cover could increase by 65 cm, the IMGW added.

The road authority GDDKiA in the Małopolska region said it would use its fleet of over 200 snow-clearing vehicles if necessary and appealed to truck drivers to "use anti-slip chains," public broadcaster Polish Radio's IAR news agency reported.

Notable snowfall is also expected in the Lubelskie, Świętokrzyskie, Opolskie, Dolnośląskie, Śląskie and Mazowieckie regions, the IMGW said.
