Poland's prime minister has said that the president's decision to veto a governmental bill that foresaw PLN 3 billion (EUR 692 million) in funding for state media in 2024, "blocks money for teachers," while allowing pay rises for CEO's of state companies.

Prime Minister Donald Tusk made the statement on the X social media platform on Saturday night.

Tusk wrote that President Andrzej Duda's veto "blocks money for kindergarten teachers and new teachers, while allowing pay rises for CEO's of state companies and agencies."

The prime minister assured "those affected" by the veto that the government would "deal with it."

Earlier in the day, the president announced that he would "veto the 2024 supplemental budget bill that includes PLN 3 billion (EUR 692 million) for state media."

Duda added the funding "cannot be approved due to a blatant violation of the constitution," referring to the government's decision to replace CEO's of state media earlier in the week.

The government's measure was designed to "restore the impartiality" of public broadcasters and "legal order," Tusk said.

The president said on Thursday that appointing the CEO's of state media was the prerogative of the National Media Council (RMN), and so the government's measures represented a "blatant breach of the constitution."

Duda announced on Friday that "immediately after Christmas" he would put forward his own bill including all the other expenditures contained in the government plan, such as pay rises for teachers.

He called on parliament to pass the bill "before the end of the year."
