Donald Tusk gave the speech on public TV broadcaster TVP, saying that 2023 “will go down in history as a breakthrough year.”
The new coalition government, led by pro-EU Prime Minister Donald Tusk, had pledged to transform state media into a source of "reliable information," a move seen as an effort to reverse the trend of media being used as a political tool.
“I want to thank you all for that year… it was difficult and full of great emotions, fights, but also a civic awakening and a triumph of democracy,” Tusk added, stressing high turnout in October 15 election that his coalition won.
The Prime Minister also said uniting Poland’s divided nation will be the most difficult task for his government, but vowed “not to stop until it is done.”
“In 2023 you surprised the world, and thanks to you hope flows from Poland to all the people who struggle for freedom,” Tusk added.
He also wished Poles a happy and safe 2024.
The new government was formed after a bloc of parties led by Tusk's liberal Civic Coalition (KO), and also including the Third Way alliance and the New Left grouping, stormed to power with a strong showing in Poland's October 15 parliamentary elections.
The Cabinet is headed by Donald Tusk as prime minister; with Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz of the Third Way alliance as deputy prime minister and defence minister; and the New Left's Krzysztof Gawkowski as deputy prime minister and digitisation minister.
