The Pole was unanimously elected to this position. "Poland is strong in the UN," Krzysztof Szczerski wrote on social media, confirming the news of his new role, which holds significant importance on the international stage.

Ambassador Szczerski highlighted that his appointment to the ECOSOC presidium underscores Poland's crucial role and ambitions in UN development policy, with a focus on sustainable development and the potential to shape the agenda for the upcoming years.

The Permanent Mission of the Republic of Poland to the United Nations in New York confirmed to PAP that Poland's priorities in ECOSOC include building societal resilience to crises, reducing inequalities, and enhancing global food security.

The new ECOSOC chairman is Canadian ambassador Robert Rae, with the presidium also including representatives from Nepal, Costa Rica, and the African group, alongside Ambassador Szczerski, to represent all UN regional groups.

ECOSOC, the primary UN body for coordinating sustainable development, consists of 54 members serving three-year terms, with a third of the members renewed annually by the General Assembly. Poland was elected to ECOSOC last year for the 2024-2026 term.
