The European Commission decided on Thursday to open infringement proceedings against all European Union countries over their failure to meet waste collection and recycling targets. The EC sent a request to the entire "27" to remove the shortcomings, public broadcaster Polish Radio’s IAR news agency reported.
Poland, next to, among others, Denmark, Spain, France, and the Czech Republic, are among 18 countries that have not achieved 50 percent of the 2020 goal for preparing for the reuse and recycling of municipal waste such as paper, metal, plastics, and glass.
The EU Directive on packaging waste contains detailed requirements and targets for the recycling of waste and various materials. According to it, at least 65 percent of all packaging waste should be recycled by the end of 2025, and by the end of 2030, 70 percent.
The Commission has given the member states two months to respond and remedy the deficiencies.
