UPDATE: As reported by the European Parliament, Hanna Gronkiewicz-Waltz will be acknowledged as a Member of Parliament during its session on October 21. She will officially assume her mandate on October 10, the day when Speaker of the Sejm Szymon Hołownia issued the decision regarding her election.
The European Parliament seat of Marcin Kierwiński expired on September 26 after he assumed a position in the Polish government as the representative for flood recovery. Former Warsaw mayor Hanna Gronkiewicz-Waltz was set to take his place, having confirmed her interest in accepting the mandate.
However, at the upcoming session of the European Parliament, despite Kierwiński’s mandate expiring, Gronkiewicz-Waltz will not be announced as his successor because Polish authorities have not yet provided the necessary information, according to the Polish state news agency PAP, citing EU sources.
Gronkiewicz-Waltz to become next MEP? "The procedure has not yet been completed due to formal reasons"
In a Monday interview with the Onet portal, Hanna Gronkiewicz-Waltz announced that, contrary to reports by PAP, she has not changed her decision and still plans to take up the MEP seat.
According to her, the procedure for transferring the position to her has not yet been completed due to formal reasons — first, Marcin Kierwiński’s mandate must be officially terminated, and a specified period must pass to allow for any potential appeals before the seat can be assumed by the next person.
Earlier, at the end of September, the Polish state news agency PAP reported that Hanna Gronkiewicz-Waltz told them she would accept the mandate as an MEP following Kierwiński's resignation, which occurred after his appointment as the government's representative for flood recovery - a story that was previously covered by Radio Poland in the following article:
