City authorities urged residents to keep their windows closed and avoid going outdoors as thick smoke spread from the blaze.

At one point, more than 40 fire units were battling the fire, according to local broadcaster TVP3.

The Government Centre for Security (RCB) issued emergency text alerts to residents, warning of potential health risks from the smoke.

The message advised people to stay indoors, close windows, and avoid the fire zone within a 1 km radius.

The fire broke out shortly after 1 p.m. in a building that once housed a rolling stock repair plant in Gdańsk’s Przeróbka district.

The site was still being used for rolling stock repairs, with some sections leased to private companies, state news agency PAP reported.

One of the affected facilities was rented by CityBike Global, the Spanish operator of the MEVO city bike system, an official told reporters.

At the time of the fire, the warehouse contained some 1,500 MEVO bicycles, including over 1,300 electric-assisted bikes and 1,000 batteries used to power electric bikes, according to state broadcaster TVP Info.

About 60 people were safely evacuated from the building before firefighters arrived. No injuries were immediately reported.

According to fire department spokesman Capt. Jakub Friedenberger, around 150 firefighters were deployed to contain the blaze.

Authorities have launched an investigation to determine the cause of the fire.
