UPDATEScandal in Polish Parliament: PiS MPs face legal repercussions

Zbigniew Konwiński, head of the Civic Coalition parliamentary group, confirmed that legal consequences are expected for Kaczyński, Antoni Macierewicz, Anna Krupka, Iwona Arent, Bartosz Kownacki, and Przemysław Czarnek. The PiS MPs are accused of chanting "murderer" at Roman Giertych, a lawyer and lawmaker with the ruling Civic Coalition (KO).

As announced by Deputy Speaker of the Sejm Piotr Zgorzelski, the incident will be investigated by the Sejm Presidium and the Seniors' Convention. Zgorzelski described the events as scandalous and noted that they involved "behavior far below any democratic and personal conduct standards."

Insults and tensions in the Polish Parliament

Roman Giertych, speaking about the incident on TVN24’s Kropka nad i, suggested that Kaczyński and the PiS camp were now more “terrified” by the Two Towers case than they had been just three weeks ago.

During his speech, Kaczyński mentioned the death of his colleague Barbara Skrzypek, who passed away after being questioned by the prosecutor’s office, in which a representative of Giertych’s office participated. Neither Skrzypek nor her representative filed any complaints regarding the questioning process.

Kaczyński referred to Giertych as the "main sadist" in the country. When Giertych approached the podium, Kaczyński stood next to him and attempted to interrupt.

"Call me uncle," says Giertych in confrontation with Kaczyński

Giertych, calling Kaczyński to step away, addressed him with the words “Call me uncle,” referencing Henryk Sienkiewicz's The Deluge. This led to shouts of "Get down, murderer!" directed at Giertych by PiS MPs, particularly Iwona Arent, who aggressively confronted him.

In an interview with Monika Olejnik from the Polish news channel TVN24, Giertych explained that he suggested Kaczyński address him as "uncle" because, to his knowledge, they are distant relatives, a connection confirmed by genealogical research.

Giertych also revealed that Kaczyński insulted him as a “scoundrel” and a “bastard” after Deputy Speaker Piotr Zgorzelski turned off the microphone during their exchange. The politician emphasized that he had "never seen anything like this" during his entire experience with the Polish Parliament.
