The president of the Bundestag lower house of parliament, Wolfgang Schaeuble, declared his support in an interview with German newspaper Sueddeutsche Zeitung, published in full on Tuesday.
Schaeuble said: “Such a monument would encourage people to reflect more about the sufferings of Poles under the German occupation and Nazi terror.”
He added: “This would also allow a better understanding of how our Polish neighbours think about current European issues, as these thoughts are influenced by the past.”
Schaeuble joins a group of roughly 240 German MPs who have come out in support of such a monument, from all parties except the far-right Alternative for Germany.
Plans for the monument were first floated in 2017, with a proposed location near Anhalter Bahnhof station in central Berlin.
