Pentagon: no decisions on US permanent military presence in Europe

Pentagon Press Secretary John F. Kirby told the media on Monday that the US did not make any decisions about changing any permanent military presence in Europe.

Kirby also added that while looking into US European posture in the wake of the invasion is planned “at the appropriate time”, the US focus is on bolstering NATO capabilities.

“We would be taking it into consideration over the long term, whether or not European posture does need any adjustments,” he said, adding however that “it's not the time now to be looking at redrawing the posture map of Europe.”

During his press briefing, Kirby also announced that the US government made the decision to deploy “an additional approximately 500 U.S.  military personnel to locations in Europe to augment U.S. forces that are already in theater.”

“They are temporary moves,” he stressed, adding the the US “will not send forces into Ukraine.”
