Is the EU Emissions Trading Scheme - designed to protect the environment from excessive emissions - in fact playing into Putin's hands? This is the suggestion of Thomas O'Donnell, energy analyst at the Hertie School of Governance in Berlin.

O'Donnell has made the remarks in an interview for the Polish Press Agency (PAP).

He suggests that since Europe has found itself in the middle of an energy crisis deliberately excacerbated by Russia, Morawiecki's proposal to suspend the Emissions Trading Scheme for the duration of the military conflict is a reasonable one.

"Russia's energy war is an integral part of its strategy to win the real war with Ukraine," he said and suggested that strict adherence to the ETS policy during an energy crisis is a mistake.
