A passenger train collided head-on with a freight train in Tempi, central Greece, late on Tuesday, killing at least 36 people and injuring dozens, in the country's deadliest rail crash in living memory, the Reuters news agency reported.

Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki said in a Twitter message: "A tragic collision between a passenger and a freight train has occurred in Greece. I extend my deepest condolences to Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis and to all those who have lost loved ones."

Polish Foreign Minister Zbigniew Rau said in a tweet: "Poland is deeply moved by the tragic train crash in Tempi. We share the pain and grief with the families and loved ones of the victims, as well as the entire Greek Nation."

He added: "We wish the injured a full and fast recovery."

The Polish foreign ministry tweeted on Wednesday: "Our sincerest condolences go to the families of the people who lost their lives in yesterday's train crash in Greece."

It added: "To all the injured in the collision, we wish a speedy recovery."

Nearly 24 hours after the deadly collision, investigators were still trying to establish who was responsible for the crash, Reuters reported.

Trains travelling in opposite directions on the same track smashed into one another at speeds some media reports put at up to 160 km an hour, reducing the passenger train into a mangled mass of steel, it said.
