Polish president congratulates Turkey’s Erdoğan on election win

Poland’s president has congratulated Recep Tayyip Erdoğan on his re-election as president of Turkey.

Erdoğan won the second round of his country's presidential election on Sunday, extending his two decades in power, news outlets reported.

Official results showed he garnered 52.14 percent of the vote, defeating his challenger Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu, who won 47.86 percent, Polish state news agency PAP reported.

Polish President Andrzej Duda tweeted: "Congratulations to Recep Tayyip Erdoğan on his victory in the presidential election."

Duda added: "This year we celebrate the 100th anniversary of the founding of the Republic of Turkey and the 100th anniversary of the signing of the Treaty of Friendship between Poland and Turkey."

The Polish president also said: "We are ready to work together to ensure regional security, the development of NATO and peace in Europe."

US President Joe Biden said in a tweet on Sunday that he was looking forward to continuing to work together with Erdoğan's Turkey "as NATO Allies on bilateral issues and shared global challenges."

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky congratulated Erdoğan in a Twitter message.

“We count on the further strengthening of the strategic partnership for the benefit of our countries, as well as the strengthening of cooperation for the security and stability of Europe,” Zelensky said, as quoted by US broadcaster CNN.

Meanwhile, Russian President Vladimir Putin said in a message of congratulations that Erdoğan's win was evidence the Turkish people appreciated their leader's independent foreign policy, the Reuters news agency reported.

"The election victory was a natural result of your selfless work as the head of the Republic of Turkey, clear evidence of the support of the Turkish people for your efforts to strengthen state sovereignty and conduct an independent foreign policy," Putin said in a message to Erdoğan, according to the Kremlin.

"We highly appreciate your personal contribution to the strengthening of friendly Russian-Turkish relations and mutually beneficial cooperation in various areas," Putin added, as quoted by Reuters.
