In response to the approach of a Russian bomber towards the Benelux airspace, the two F-16 aircraft were scrambled from the air base in Volkel.

The Dutch defense ministry disclosed that Danish armed forces' aircraft joined the interception effort, culminating in the Russian plane being intercepted over Danish territory.

There has been numerous instances of Russian aircraft encroaching upon the airspace of NATO nations since the eruption of hostilities in Ukraine. Nearly every month witnesses the intervention of NATO fighter jets to counter these violations.

In a recent event, Dutch F-35s stationed in Poland, back in late February this year, intercepted two Russian aircraft that were spotted within international airspace over the Baltic Sea. A similar incident unfolded in mid-February, involving Dutch Air Force F-35 fighters intercepting three Russian planes that approached the NATO air defense zone.
