While temporary, the measures announced by the Czech authorities are projected to remain in place until October 13.

The move comes a year after the reintroduction of border checks from September 2022 to February 2023 due to a similar uptick in migration.

Czech Prime Minister Petr Fiala on Tuesday articulated the urgency of the matter, stating that proactive steps will "ensure the safety of our citizens," particularly in combatting human smugglers and traffickers.

Meanwhile, Poland’s Interior Minister Mariusz Kamiński said on Tuesday that Poland was reinstating temporary checks on the border with Slovakia to prevent an influx of illegal migrants.

"In recent weeks, we detected and detained 551 illegal migrants at the border with Slovakia," he told reporters. "This situation causes us to take decisive action," he added.

Kamiński has engaged in discussions with officials from Germany, Slovakia, Austria, the Czech Republic, and the European Commission, in line with Schengen Zone regulations, according to officials.

Slovak Prime Minister Ludovit Odor has pledged to address the new checks initiated by Poland and the Czech Republic, advocating for a cohesive European solution for external border migration issues, Polish state news agency PAP reported.
