"I held a phone conversation with the Israeli Foreign Minister Eli Cohen on the progress of the Israeli military operation in Gaza in response to the barbaric Hamas terrorist attack on Israel," Rau said in a tweet on Tuesday.
The Polish foreign minister added: "We discussed the humanitarian situation in the Gaza Strip ahead of a conference in Paris on Thursday where I will address the issue. As Israel will not be attending the conference, I wanted to learn Minister Cohen's point of view on the issue."
Rau also said that he and Cohen "took the opportunity to discuss the situation of the Polish families trapped in Gaza."
The Polish foreign minister added that he was grateful to Cohen "for his personal involvement in organising aid for them."
Rau remarked in his post that "the situation of the civilian population must be of particular concern to democratic governments."
"Poland and Israel will pursue a path of cooperation on this issue," he stated.
Polish Deputy Foreign Minister Paweł Jabłoński said on Tuesday that Poland was waiting for a formal decision by Israel to allow the evacuation of Polish citizens from the Gaza Strip, amid the Israeli army’s offensive against Hamas.
The war between Israel and Hamas started when the Palestinian militant group launched a surprise attack from Gaza on October 7, according to media reports.
