Polish President Andrzej Duda and Belarus opposition leaders, headed by Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya, met at the Belweder palace in Warsaw on Tuesday evening.

It's an annual get-together on the occasion of Orthodox Christmas, according to officials.

Duda said he was advocating for a free, independent and democratic Belarus "on every international forum," adding that Poland was working for the "release of all political prisoners" held by the Lukashenko regime.

They include the Polish-Belarusian journalist and activist Andrzej Poczobut, imprisoned by Minsk in 2021, state broadcaster Belsat noted.

The president paid tribute to Belarusian opposition, led by Tsikhanouskaya who heads the Cabinet-in-exile.

He said that thanks to their efforts, Belarus could be "free, sovereign and independent" in the future, and wished everyone that it happened in 2024.

The Belarus opposition leader thanked Duda and Poland for support, adding that Poland was "not only a neighbour but a strategic partner" as well as a "second home" for thousands of Belarusians fleeing the Lukashenko regime.

It was the second day of Tsikhanouskaya's visit to Poland, during which she also met with Poland's Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski and the country's top lawmakers, Belsat reported.
