Edem Wosornu, director of the Operations and Advocacy Division for the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), announced the figure at a session of the UN Security Council in New York on Wednesday.

The UN official said that financial support for Ukraine "must be sustained" amid Russia's continuing aggression.

Wosomu stated: "In 2024, we urge all donors to once again step up and help the people of Ukraine."

On Monday, OCHA and the UN refugee agency will launch the organisation's response plan for 2024, aiming to raise "USD 3.1 billion to assist 8.5 million people in Ukraine," she added.

On Tuesday, OCHA said that due to Russia's full-scale invasion, over 14.6 million people, or 40% of Ukraine's population, will require humanitarian assistance in 2024.

Meanwhile, the war has also forced 6.3 million people to flee abroad, while a further four million, including almost a million children, remain displaced inside Ukraine, according to the UN.

Wosornu also told the Security Council that UN's access to Russian-occupied parts of Ukraine was "significantly impeded," affecting "hundreds of thousands of people living in occupied areas close to the front line, where needs are most urgent,"as quoted by the Reuters news agency.

Wednesday is day 686 of Russia’s war on Ukraine.

Russia invaded Ukraine on February 24, 2022, launching the largest military campaign in Europe since World War II.
