EU's €50 Billion for Ukraine - Orbán close to U-Turn

Diplomats and officials have indicated that Hungary is getting closer to a "face-saving U-turn" that would release €50 Billion earmarked for Ukraine but currently blocked by Hungary's veto.

Orbán said at a news conference on 16 January, "If we want to help Ukraine, which I think we need to do, we have to do it in a way that doesn't harm the EU's budget", indicating a willingness to compromise on the veto Hungary has placed on the €50 billion four-year funding package supported by all EU members except Hungary.

Politico has further reported that "several European diplomats and officials" involved in negotiations have said that Hungary is getting closer to making a U-turn.

Orbán also implied that his opposition was not to the 50 billion euros per se but to the fact that the transfers are planned for four years in advance when, "We do not even know what will happen in a quarter of a year."

An alternative to reaching a compromise with Hungary has been voiced, for instance, by Guy Verhofstadt, suggesting that the EU would be better off simply circumventing the requirement of unanimity and avoiding "blackmail" also in the future:
