The issue of support for Ukraine divided Republicans since the beginning of the primary debates, with some leading candidates following Trump in arguing for a non-interventionist foreign policy.

The last candidate standing against Trump, Nikki Haley was previously the US Ambassador to the United Nations under Trump. Despite losing to Trump in the New Hampshire primaries, Haley has declared she will continue her fight for the Republican nomination.

Trump has not only said that he does not support Ukraine, he has frequently expressed admiration for Putin and undermined NATO.

David Charter, the US Editor for The Times, has reported that Trump has gone even further in pre-election campaigning, stating that he does not see "dictator" as a necessarily bad thing.
