Szmydt's case came to light on May 6, when he appeared at a propaganda press conference in Minsk, Belarus, while serving as a judge at the Provincial Administrative Court in Warsaw.

The Belarusian state news agency BelTA reported that Szmydt had requested "care and protection" from Belarusian authorities. Subsequently, Szmydt announced his resignation from his judicial position "with immediate effect."

Following his appearance, Szmydt featured in Belarusian and Russian media, echoing propaganda narratives. In response to the prosecutor's investigation, the Disciplinary Court at the Supreme Administrative Court revoked Szmydt's judicial immunity on May 9, authorized his detention and temporary arrest, and suspended him from his duties.

Shortly after, the president of the Supreme Administrative Court accepted Szmydt's resignation from his judicial office with immediate effect.

Last month, Szmydt announced his intentions to acquire Belarusian citizenship while maintaining his Polish nationality.
