Due to the large number of rental apartments offered to tourists, Croatians are facing a housing shortage, according to the Tenants Together initiative.
The originators of this project argue that the quality of life of young people who cannot find a flat is deteriorating due to the buildings being divided into small apartments offered to tourists. "We appeal to all those who suffer from mass tourism and want to change our country for the better," called the representatives of the Tenants Together movement. Last week, the petition had over 1.1 thousand signatures.
The initiators of this social movement assessed that "excessive division of buildings into small apartments is illegal, violates the right to a peaceful, dignified and inviolable family home guaranteed in the constitution, and violates several (other) regulations."
The number of tourists visiting Croatia increased by 10% over last year, to 3.4 million. Poles accounted for the majority of tourists based on the Croatian Tourist Board's data.
According to the latest Eurostat data, Croatia is the European Union country most dependent on tourism, generating 11 percent of its GDP from this sector. The average across EU member states is 4.5 percent.
