Ursula von der Leyen may fall short of her goal for gender balance in the European Commission because EU governments have not adhered to her request for an equal number of male and female candidates.

Despite her re-election for a second term, the list of candidates includes 14 men and only 5 women, with several countries expected to nominate more men before the August 30 deadline, reports „The Guardian”.

If the current trend continues, the next commission could have only 22 to 26 percent women, down from the previous 44 percent female representation, according to analyses of government announcements and local media reports.

Gálvez Muñoz calls on von der Leyen to focus on achieving gender balance

Lina Gálvez Muñoz, chair of the European Parliament’s gender equality committee, has urged von der Leyen to push for more female candidates, emphasizing the need to uphold strong commitments to gender equality.

"A European Commission lacking gender balance does not reflect our European Union values. Especially now, as anti-democratic forces place anti-gender policies at their core, it is time to advance, not retreat," commented Lina Gálvez Muñoz via social media.
