António Costa was elected at the end of June for a two-and-a-half-year term, with the possibility of extending it for another two and a half years.

All previous Presidents of the European Council served for five years - Herman Van Rompuy, Donald Tusk, and Charles Michel.

The 63-year-old António Costa has risen through all levels of political office, including serving as Minister of Justice under António Guterres (currently the UN Secretary-General), Minister of the Interior, Mayor of Lisbon, Vice-President of the European Parliament, and Prime Minister of Portugal for eight years.

In November 2023, he resigned as Prime Minister amid a corruption investigation, although he was neither charged nor considered a suspect.

In 2024, Costa was chosen as President of the European Council, committing to strengthen EU unity and prioritize key strategic objectives.
