"I have information that Russia is behind sabotage operations in Poland and allied countries," Sikorski told reporters.

"I have therefore decided to withdraw consent for the functioning of the Russian consulate in Poznań," he announced.

Sikorski said that Poland would declare the consulate's diplomats "personae non gratae."

"Recently Wrocław, a city located in the consulate's district, has seen a sabotage attempt orchestrated by foreign intelligence services," the Polish foreign ministry said in a statement.

"After assessment of evidence, the court rejected the plea bargain requested by the accused," it added.

Russia 'waging hybrid war against Poland'

"Polish services report that the Russian Federation is waging a hybrid war against Poland," the statement also said. "This includes cyberattacks and assaults at Poland’s eastern frontier, which is also the Schengen area's border."

Sikorski called on Russia's authorities "to stop this kind of activities targeted at the Republic of Poland and its allies," the Polish foreign ministry further stated.

"Should such incidents reoccur, Poland reserves the right to take further decisive measures," it declared.

Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova described Poland's move as "another hostile step" and announced a "painful" response, the Reuters news agency reported.
