During his stay in the Polish capital, President Macron laid flowers at the Charles de Gaulle monument and met with Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk and President Andrzej Duda.
At the end of the day, a visit to the Warsaw Uprising Museum was planned, commemorating the 1944 Polish uprising against the Nazis during WWII.
However, during his time in Warsaw, it was announced that the French President had canceled this final part of his visit and decided to return to Paris earlier.
According to AFP, the unexpected decision to shorten the official visit may be linked to the announcement of a new prime minister, expected on Friday. On December 13, François Bayrou, leader of the MoDem party, was officially appointed, following the previous government's resignation due to a vote of no confidence in parliament.
"During my meeting with President Emmanuel Macron, I presented him with a special album prepared for the 80th anniversary of the Warsaw Uprising," Warsaw Mayor Rafał Trzaskowski shared on social media. He added that their conversation touched on the future of a united Europe and Polish-French relations, with an emphasis on preserving historical memory.
Trzaskowski also showcased his fluency in French, which he had the opportunity to demonstrate during his conversation with President Macron. “The French language comes in handy,” Trzaskowski joked, ending his message with “Bonne nuit!” meaning "Good night."
Summing up his visit to Warsaw, President Macron praised Poland’s support since the start of Russia’s aggression in Ukraine. He emphasized that there can be no peace in Ukraine without the Ukrainians, and no security in Europe without the Europeans. Macron called for continued cooperation to achieve these objectives.
