Daniel Lawton will serve as Chargé d’Affaires until the new U.S. Ambassador to Poland is appointed, confirmed the American Embassy.

According to official sources, Lawton, who has acted as Deputy Chief of Mission, is a Senior Foreign Service officer with over 30 years of diplomatic experience. He has held several key positions, including Director of the Ukraine Task Force, Director of the Office of Central European Affairs, and Principal Officer at the U.S. Consulate General in Belfast.

Lawton will replace Mark Brzezinski until his successor is officially confirmed.

Brzezinski's diplomatic mission in Poland ended on January 20, the day of the inauguration of Donald Trump as the 47th President of the United States.

The top U.S. diplomat shared via social media that during his three years in Poland, Polish-American relations became "stronger than ever before."

"Poland has truly become a second home to me. As I say goodbye, I am confident that the bond between our nations will continue to grow and strengthen. The future is full of possibilities, hope, and promises, and I look forward to what lies ahead for both Poland and the United States," said Brzezinski, who was officially bid farewell by, among others, Radosław Sikorski, Poland's Minister of Foreign Affairs.

In mid-January 2025, Brzeziński was awarded the Commander’s Cross of the Order of Merit of the Republic of Poland for his contributions to developing Polish-American cooperation and fostering friendly relations.
