Representatives of the European Union point out that the Belarusian election campaign violated democratic standards by intimidating and repressing citizens.
"This is an insult to democracy," Kaja Kalas wrote on X, commenting on the election in Belarus. The Estonian politician and Vice-President of the European Commission added that Lukashenka "nominated himself president in yet another rigged election."
"It’s a complete lie. This can’t be recognized as a legitimate election," European Commission spokeswoman Anita Hipper commented.
In a recently adopted resolution, MEPs called for tougher sanctions against the Belarusian regime, imposed since 2020, when the authorities in Minsk began brutal repression against protesting citizens after the rigged presidential elections.
The polls opened at 8:00 AM local time in Belarus. Aleksandr Lukashenka is running for presidential office for the seventh time. Neither of the four counter-candidates represents the democratic opposition.
