This will be the 16th package to be adopted in connection with the third anniversary of the Kremlin's aggression against Ukraine. Poland will be represented at the meeting by Minister Radosław Sikorski.
An extension of the previously adopted sanctions against Russia is being considered by the EU. However, Viktor Orban's controversial statement raised concerns about Hungary's likely opposition to the 16th package of sanctions against the Kremlin. "It is unacceptable for Hungarians to bear the economic burden of such sanctions," he said in Saturday's interview.
Poland’s Prime Minister, Donald Tusk, criticized this statement, stating that “If Viktor Orban blocks European sanctions at a key moment in the war, it will be obvious (...) that he is playing for Putin's team, not ours - with all the consequences," the Polish prime minister wrote in English.
It is also expected that cooperation between the US and EU will be discussed at the ministerial meeting since Donald Trump took office a week ago.
