The two also discussed Germany's political landscape following Sunday’s national elections, the Polish Prime Minister's Office announced.

Merz's conservative alliance of the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) and the Christian Social Union (CSU) won the early parliamentary election on February 23, positioning him as the likely next chancellor.

After the election, preliminary coalition talks have begun between Merz’s CDU/CSU bloc and the centre-left Social Democratic Party (SPD), Polish state news agency PAP reported.

Merz has said he hopes to launch formal negotiations quickly and form a government before Easter.

As coalition talks unfold, Merz has also reached out to international leaders.

On Wednesday, he met with French President Emmanuel Macron for talks during which they agreed on a "new beginning in German-French relations," according to reports.

During his campaign, Merz emphasised strengthening Franco-German cooperation and revitalising the Weimar Triangle, a strategic partnership between Poland, Germany and France, the PAP news agency reported.

Before the election, he pledged that his first official trips as chancellor would be to Paris and Warsaw, according to Germany's Bild newspaper.

In recent days, Merz has raised concerns about the future of US involvement in European security, including NATO's role and continued support for Ukraine in its defence against Russia, according to the PAP news agency.

At the same time, it said, he expressed hope that he could persuade US officials that strong transatlantic ties remain in the shared interest of both Europe and the United States.

Amid uncertainty over Washington’s commitment to European defence, Merz stressed the need to accelerate efforts to bolster Europe’s own military capabilities.
