Canada, which holds this year's rotating presidency of the G7, will host a summit of foreign ministers of the group next week. In negotiations to formulate a joint statement on maritime issues, the US is pushing for a tougher stance on China while softening its language toward Russia, Bloomberg informed.
The US has not only protested Canada's proposal to establish a task force to monitor sanctions violations. A draft of the G7 statement obtained by Bloomberg shows that the United States was pushing to remove the word "sanctions," as well as citing Russia’s "ability to maintain its war" in Ukraine by replacing it with "earn revenue", the agency reported. At the same time, the US has been pushing for a direct designation of China in the context of increasing the risk caused by Beijing's actions aimed at "enforcing unlawful maritime claims".
G7 communiqués gain official status only when they are published by consensus. The negotiations preceding this moment may bring significant changes both before the summit and during it, the agency stressed.
The G7, a group formed by democratic countries with the most developed economies, includes the US, Japan, Germany, Great Britain, France, Italy and Canada.
