Before Russia's attack on Ukraine, the LNG coming from Russia to the EU amounted to 45% of the bloc's total import. Now it has fallen to a dozen or so percent. Brussels already announced a complete withdrawal from supplies of blue fuel from Russia by 2027.
"It is a necessity. It is an absolute necessity. We tried to get rid of dependence on Russian gas, but it also caused huge energy problems. But it is also proof that when we decide to act together, we can get rid of excessive dependence and develop a safe and affordable energy market"
- the Commission's head said. However, Ursula von der Leyen did not declare when exactly the Commission would present a plan to completely free the EU from Russian gas supplies.
Last week Ryszard Pawlik, the Brussels office head of the Polish Electricity Committee, said that the Commission had postponed the publication of the plan on this matter, citing internal documents.
Initially, the Commission was supposed to publish this plan at the end of February 2025, but then moved the publication date to March. Now the strategy has been removed from the work calendar for the coming weeks.
