Tusk emphasized that Romania is a key partner in defending the eastern border of the European Union and NATO. He pointed out that Morawiecki’s support for such a candidate shows that his party, Law and Justice (PiS), "is no longer even pretending" to hide their pro-Russian sympathies, as he stated on social media.
In Bucharest this past weekend, Morawiecki supported George Simion's presidential candidacy, calling him a "stabilizing force" for both Romania and the EU, and said Poland and Romania could become a "locomotive of development" in the region. However, Tusk criticized Morawiecki’s endorsement, pointing out that Simion’s party opposes European integration and NATO values.
Polish minister condemns support for pro-Russian candidate in Romania
Andrzej Domański, the Polish Finance Minister, also voiced his anger, noting that the PiS party had previously opposed the "Eastern Shield" initiative but is now backing a pro-Russian candidate in Romania.
Morawiecki's support for Simion has sparked further tensions in the region, where Poland, a key ally of Romania, is being increasingly perceived by some politicians as aligning with pro-Russian tendencies.
