Polish military confirms death of soldier in Iraq

A Polish soldier deployed to Iraq has died, the country’s military confirmed in an official statement issued Monday.

The servicemember, part of the Polish Military Contingent stationed in Iraq, died on Sunday, June 15. The news was shared by Lieutenant General Maciej Klisz, Operational Commander of the Polish Armed Forces, who described the death as the result of suicide.

"With deep sorrow and sadness, I inform that on Sunday, June 15, 2025, a tragic incident occurred at the stationing area of the Polish Military Contingent in Iraq - the suicide of one of our soldiers serving abroad," Gen. Klisz wrote. He added that the circumstances of the incident are currently under investigation by the Military Police, under the supervision of the appropriate prosecutor’s office.

The soldier’s family has been provided with necessary support, including psychological care.

"On behalf of myself and the entire military community, I extend heartfelt condolences to the soldier’s loved ones," Gen. Klisz said.

The Polish mission in Iraq, ongoing since 2016, involves up to 350 troops. It supports both NATO’s training operations and the Global Coalition against ISIS, including efforts to enhance Iraqi capabilities in maintaining Soviet-era military equipment.
