Police uncovered him during a large-scale operation linked to a fraud ring that allegedly financed the planned attack.
According to the newspaper Bild, the suspect is a former soldier and did not act alone, prompting prosecutors to order raids across six cities in North Rhine-Westphalia. The group obtained electrical equipment fraudulently, reselling it for tens of thousands of euros and planning further deals.
The suspect was arrested and is due to appear in court today, where prosecutors will seek pre-trial detention. Authorities have not disclosed when or where the attack was intended to take place.
Earlier on Wednesday, the DPA news agency reported that special police units conducted raids on six properties across several German cities to prevent the suspected Islamist terror plot, according to the Düsseldorf Public Prosecutor’s Office and Essen police.
