Tusk spoke in Chisinau at events marking Moldova’s 34th independence anniversary, attended at President Maia Sandu’s invitation by France’s Emmanuel Macron and Germany’s Chancellor Friedrich Merz.
“A safe, prosperous and stable Moldova as part of the European Union is in the vital interest of the EU as a whole,” Tusk said, adding that the Union’s peace, prosperity and security are linked to Moldova’s.
He said Moldova is “exactly the kind of country we want in the European Union.”
Moldova holds parliamentary elections on September 28.
Sandu warned in July of an “unprecedented” attempt by Russia to influence the vote, saying the Russian Federation “wants to control Moldova starting this fall.”
She cautioned against external efforts to destabilize the country and alleged offers to buy votes.
