Speaker of the Polish Senate Małgorzata Kidawa-Błońska and the Lord Speaker of the UK House of Lords, Lord John McFall, met with NATO troops and commanders at the Orzysz Land Forces Training Centre in Bemowo Piskie, in north-east Poland, on Wednesday.
Lord McFall is visiting Poland at the invitation of Speaker Kidawa-Błońska, with talks focused on European security, allied cooperation and the evolving role of NATO’s forward-deployed forces.
Strengthening NATO’s eastern defences
The NATO Enhanced Forward Presence Battle Group, based in Bemowo Piskie since 2017, plays a key role in deterring potential aggression and enhancing coordination among allied troops.
The United States leads the battlegroup, supported by contributions from the United Kingdom, Romania and Croatia, working alongside Poland’s 15th Mechanized Brigade.

During the visit, the parliamentary leaders met with Colonel John Michael Nimmons, commander of the NATO battle group, and were briefed on progress in developing Poland’s new Eastern Shield defence system, designed to strengthen the country’s border protection and bolster NATO’s eastern flank.
Officials from both countries underlined that cooperation between Polish and allied forces remains central to NATO’s strategy for deterrence and collective defence in Eastern Europe.
Speaker Kidawa-Błońska also highlighted the professionalism of Poland’s military training centres, noting that they provide an excellent base for allied exercises and operational readiness.
