The remains of Polish soldiers who died during World War II are set to be reburied in western Ukraine on 14 November, the Ukrainian ambassador to Poland, Vasyl Bodnar, told the Ukrinform news portal.

The bodies were exhumed in Lviv in August as part of ongoing efforts to locate and properly commemorate those who perished during the conflict.

Bodnar said preparations are underway to send teams to other sites where further searches and exhumations will take place.

Recent exhumations have already been conducted in Puzhnyky, in the Ternopil region of western Ukraine, where the remains of Polish victims of the Volhynia massacre - widely recognised as a genoicide targeting Polish civilians during WWII - were recovered and reburied.

The ceremonies in Puzhnyky were attended by Ukrainian and Polish officials, as well as descendants of the village’s former residents.

The ambassador also indicated that Kyiv hopes to host a visit from Oleksandr Alfyorov, head of the Ukrainian Institute of National Remembrance, to Warsaw for talks on continuing search and exhumation efforts in both Ukraine and Poland.

Bodnar expressed gratitude to Polish authorities for their support in search operations in Jureczkowa in Poland’s Subcarpathian region, noting that while efforts to locate potential graves of former Ukrainian Insurgent Army fighters have concluded without results, collaboration between the two countries will continue.

The diplomat added that the Ukrainian side is ready to keep Polish parliamentarians regularly informed about developments in Polish-Ukrainian cooperation on exhumation and historical research project.
