The survey found that 86 percent of Americans oppose using military force to seize the island, which is an autonomous territory of Denmark.

Only 14 percent said they would support such a move, CBS News reported.

Americans are also strongly against using federal funds to purchase Greenland.

While 30 percent of respondents said they would support President Donald Trump using government money to buy the island, 70 percent said they oppose the idea.

Opposition to the use of force cuts across party lines, the poll found. Among Democrats, 97 percent said they oppose taking Greenland by force. About 70 percent of Republicans also opposed such a move, while roughly 30 percent said they would support it.

Nearly seven in 10 Americans—69 percent—said a US takeover of Greenland by force would likely lead to the United States leaving NATO.

The same percentage said such a move would increase global instability.

At the same time, 54 percent of respondents said acquiring Greenland would give the United States access to important natural resources, while 42 percent viewed it as a potential show of strength toward Russia and China, CBS News reported.

The poll was carried out from January 14 to 16 among 2,523 US adults.
