The embassy said on X: “Any British or NATO military action against Russian territory would be met with all means at Russia’s disposal, including nuclear weapons.”
The statement was prompted by an article titled “Russia’s tiny outpost in Europe could be Putin’s greatest weakness” by Kieron Monks, published in the British newspaper i on 26 September 2026.
The newspaper wrote that NATO has various options for exerting pressure on Kaliningrad, which could be used to exert pressure on Russia.
It suggested such pressure could be aimed at reducing Russian sabotage operations in Europe or encouraging Russia to take peace talks on Ukraine more seriously.
British security analyst Edward Lucas told i that NATO’s key message should be that if Russia tries something, it will lose Kaliningrad.
The Russian embassy also referred to Sky News’ miniseries “Wargame”, a political-fiction war game in which Russia is the aggressor and a conventional strike on Kaliningrad is presented as a response to Russian actions.
