“Initiated by Poland, the debate aims to draw particular attention of the international community to the protection of vulnerable groups, especially girls in the context of sexual violence" and the protection of persons with disabilities, the Polish foreign ministry said ahead of the gathering.

It added that the debate would be based on the UN secretary-general’s annual report for 2018 on children involved in armed conflicts.

The debate is set to be one of the highlights of Poland’s turn at the rotating presidency of the UN Security Council in August.

Poland’s Czaputowicz told reporters in Warsaw this week that his country would organise several high-profile events during its month-long stint at the helm of the United Nations Security Council.

These include a high-level briefing on humanitarian law on August 13, a debate on security in the Middle East on August 20, and a debate on religious freedom on August 22.

Poland on January 1, 2018 became a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council for a two-year term that ends on December 31, 2019.

Poland held the rotating presidency of the 15-member Council in May last year.

The country again took over at the helm of the Council on August 1.
